Minnesota Power Asks For a Huge Rate Increase

It’s common knowledge that anything Wisconsin can do, Minnesota can do better. And that certainly seems to be the case (in a bad way) when it comes to raising electric rates.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on more expensive electricity in Minnesota:

  1. 🥺 Please? - At the start of the month, Minnesota Power asked the state to approve a 12% rate increase.
  2. 📈 One More Time - Minnesota Power already increased its rate by 9.5% in January, which is thankfully less than what they had requested at the time.
  3. 🫴 For the People - The provider said the money would be used to hire and train new employees and make the transition away from fossil fuels.
  4. 💵 Big Bump - If approved, the increase would cost the average customer an extra $11 a month or $133 a year.
  5. 💵 $Profit$ - It should be noted that Minnesota Power reported a third quarter net income of $85.9M, up from $33.7M during the same period last year. So it’s not like they can’t afford to pay for those new employees or the new technology.

🔥Bottom line: How much of this is necessary, how much of it is pointing the finger at the green energy boogeyman, and how much of it is plain robbery? It’s up for you to decide. It certainly looks like the end result is higher utility bills for you and higher profits for the providers.
