Minnesota Lawmakers Roll Out 2024 Wishlist

Minnesota Republicans and Democrats have unveiled their legislative priorities for the next year. But with the Democrats, especially the Democratic Farm League (DFL), in total control of the state government, Republicans’ wish list may be left out in the cold.

Here’s Five Fast Facts About 2024 legislation:

  1. 📜 Easy, There - Senate and House Republicans are very concerned about a potential $2.3B deficit in two years, despite the record $17.5B surplus. It’s given them renewed push to try and rein in DFL spending.
  2. ✂️ Bill Busters - House Republicans want to make adjustments to several bills, including the paid family and medical leave bill that was recently passed.
  3. 🧒 Chillin’ Children - Democrats in both chambers said they will continue to focus on reducing childcare costs. They said this push is based on the wishes of their constituents.
  4. 🏥 Med Money - House DFLers want to pass some kind of legislation that would let Minnesotans buy into MinnesotaCare, regardless of their income. They also said the crux of their focus will be policy rather than spending.
  5. 😶‍🌫️ Best Friends? - Both parties do agree on a few things. They plan on addressing complaints and concerns about school resource officers and legal marijuana.

🔥Bottom line: Republicans want to control spending. Democrats (and the DFL) want to figure out how to spend the money they allocated in 2023. And while State Republicans’ hopes look grim, there is an overall pledge of cooperation. We’ll see how that goes.
