What is it about government types that makes them want to regulate EVERYTHING?? The Dept of Energy recently took aim at dishwashers, and it could have a major impact on both your day-to-day life and your Paychecks.
Here are Five Fast Facts about the new dishwasher mandates:
- ‼️ The Mandate - The government recently announced that dishwasher makers would have to reduce the amount of water used from 5 gallons to 3.2, and that each unit would have to consume 30% less energy doing it. No magic wands can be used, either.
- 🤞 The Promise - They claim that this will save Americans almost $170 million on their utility bills each year, and generate $570 billion in greenhouse gas emissions over the next 30 years. Because CLIMATE CHANGE.
- 😡 The Pushback - The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers isn’t happy about this, pointing out major new production costs for manufacturers to meet these standards while providing only “meager” energy savings.
- ⏳ The History - These energy efficiency mandates are rooted in a law from 1975, when the conventional wisdom said there was energy scarcity. Since then, technology improvements have largely removed the need for these mandates. And, it wasn’t all that long ago that America was a net exporter of energy! But let’s not let facts get in the way of a good mandate, right?
- 💰 The Real World Impact - This will impact normal folks in a couple ways. Dishwasher product and installation costs will go up by millions each year, and the energy savings will only be around $1.50 per month. It is also very likely that dishwasher cycles will take longer and they’ll get your dishes less clean. Ewww…
🔥Bottom line: The government seems to love telling us how we should live. All too often, that means we get to pay more for the privilege of getting less than they promise. They’ve mandated new efficiency standards on 16 different product categories this year alone! Sure, we’re all about protecting the environment, but are we the only ones wondering just how often this whole “save the planet” thing is being used to justify increasing costs on everyday things?
One thing is for sure: our Paychecks are taking a beating because of it, and now more than ever that’s a bad thing for normal folks.
