Looking for a cheap fall weekend activity? 🤔🍂 Why not head to one of Ohio's super autumn-tastic hiking areas? 🥾 The Buckeye State is home to several state forests, 74 state parks, and 12 state wildlife areas. 🏕️
Bonus? The leaves are just starting to turn that beautiful pumpkin spice color. Hold the nutmeg! 🙃☕
Here’s five great places to get your hike on:
- 🏞️ Don't Go Chasin' Waterfalls - In southern Ohio, hit the trails at Hocking Hills State Park. The park is over 2,000 acres and features sparkling waterfalls, glorious gorges, and giant sandstone rock formations. The two-mile Conkle's Hollow Upper Rim Trail is a fantastic stroll to gawk at some foliage.
- 🌳 Tree Dwellers - Wanna catch a glimpse of the largest public treehouse village in the country? Head to Oak Openings Preserve between Whitehouse and Swanton. In addition to treehouses, you'll get to explore a whole 5,000 acres of nature, complete with wetlands, cacti, and orchids.
- 🦅 Buzz Off - If you're craving some creepy vibes this fall, take a road trip to the Edge of Appalachia Preserve. This protected area spans 465 acres and includes the ominous Buzzardroost Rock Trail. You'll probably see (you guessed it) buzzards along your hike and a sweeping, panoramic view of some of the best scenery in Ohio.
- 🌄 Salty, But Sweet - Boasting a brag-worthy 20,000 plus acres, Salt Fork is Ohio's largest state park. Located in the southeastern part of the state, this little slice of heaven has some pretty impressive forest areas. While you're there, stop by the historic Kennedy Stone House and snap a pic.
- 🧚Just Fairy Things - In the southwestern Ohio town of Bellbrook, you'll find the Sugarcreek Metro Park. You'll also find the Orange Trail, which is known for its major fairytale vibes. The Osage Orange Tunnel is literally a living tunnel made of trees. One walk through it and you just might turn into a gnome.
🔥Bottom line: Hikes might be the perfect extra curricular for fall. Bring your sweetheart, the kids, or some pals and make a day out of it. Don't forget the picnic basket…and stay hydrated!
