Lakeville, Minnesota Teachers Vote to Authorize Strike

Teachers in the Lakeville School District have voted to authorize a strike. Why are they striking and what’s at stake?

Here’s Five Fast Facts About The Lakeville Teachers Strike:

  1. 🏫 Recess - The strike was authorized after negotiations over wage increases, affordable healthcare, and better benefits broke down. A surprising 99% of teachers voted in favor of the strike.
  2. 🎒 Transfer Student - The teachers also oppose the “right of assignment” language in their contracts. It allows the Lakeville district to unilaterally transfer teachers between buildings, subjects, and even grade levels.
  3. 🚌 Summer Break - Negotiations had been ongoing since July 2023 and became so difficult that mediation was brought in.
  4. 🧑‍🏫 Try Again - Another mediation session is scheduled for May 6. The teachers want it moved up, while the district says it’s the earliest date available.
  5. 📚 Expanding - Lakeville isn’t alone: a similar strike looks likely to happen in Minneapolis this month.

🔥Bottom line: Are we gearing up for another round of strikes here in Minnesota? It sure looks that way when it comes to our teachers. Hopefully some kind of agreement can be reached where everyone comes away happy before it’s too late.
