Laid Off Fed Workers Look to PA State Jobs

Stop! In the name of DOGE…before you cut my job. 🎶 Recognize that little ditty by The Supremes? OK, those aren’t the real lyrics. But singing them might put a smile on your face in a…supremely strange time! 🙃🥳

Fed workers who didn’t DOGE the job cut bullet are now applying to PA’s state jobs. Here’s the latest on Gov. Shapiro’s new initiative. ⏬

Here’s Five Fast Facts on PA state jobs for former fed workers:

  1. 🤘 Club Slash - Thanks to new initiatives from the Trump administration (and Elon Musk), many federal workers’ jobs are on the chopping block. Through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), they’re looking to reduce government spending by slashing jobs, grants, and leases across the country. Roughly 103,700 Pennsylvanians were employed by the federal government in 2024.
  1. ✅ Pass the Pre-Check - Earlier this month, Gov. Josh Shapiro signed an executive order for state agencies to make hiring cut fired federal workers a priority. These candidates are considered “pre-qualified” since they worked similar or equivalent jobs at the federal level. The goal is to speed up the hiring process, put people back to work, and fill key job openings.
  2. 💼 Hire Power - Over the past week, around 700 candidates with federal work experience sent in over 1,000 applications to PA state jobs. This number could also include more than just those caught up in recent DOGE layoffs. Now, these candidates are making their way through the hiring process.
  1. 🌟 Golden Gigs - As of this past week, over 600 job openings were listed on a special PA.gov website geared towards cut federal workers. According to the Office of Administration, jobs with the most applications include “Unemployment Compensation Claims Intake Interviewer,” “Driver License Examiner Assistant,” and “Clerical Assistant.” Other hot jobs include admin jobs and gigs in public health, parks, and IT.
  1. 🤝 Neighborly News - PA’s not the only state lending cut federal workers a helping hand. Maryland’s Gov. Wes Moore put a similar program in place to recruit federal workers. In New Jersey, the state’s Department of Labor reminds impacted residents of the unemployment and career services available to them.

🔥Bottom line: We’re still pretty much in the void with all of these cuts. Will they be the best thing that’s ever happened to America or a big ol’ nightmare? Time will tell. In other job-related news, more Americans than ever have more than one job. We’ve got the latest stats served up in this article
