Keep These 5 Fall Money Deadlines on Your Radar

Grab a pen (or a stylus) and pull up your calendar. 🗓️ This fall has some important money deadlines you don't want to miss. 👀🍂 Whether you're getting your tax ducks in a row or gearing up for student loan payments to kick back in, knowing the exact day things happen is half the battle.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on the upcoming money deadlines:

  1. 💵 The Taxman Cometh - If you're self-employed, run a small business, or hustle in the gig economy, September 15th was the third-quarter estimated tax deadline. If you're expecting a tax liability of $1,000 or more, you should’ve filed and paid.

  2. 🧑‍🎓 Leave Me a Loan - D Day…uhh we mean October 1st is when student loan repayments resume. If this is going to shake up your financial situation, take the rest of September to sit down and make a plan. Don't forget to call your loan servicer to discuss options to ease the burden, like choosing an optimal payment due date or income driven repayment plans.
  1. 🤑 The Taxman (Still) Cometh - If you couldn't make the April tax deadline, October 16th is your new deadline to pay up what you owe. Hit up your accountant or fire up the ol' Turbo Tax and make sure everything's good to go.
  1. 🥰 Pennies From Heaven - Attention all do-gooders who deduct charitable donations from their income tax returns! December 31st is the last day to make a donation for it to count for 2023.
  1. 👴🏽 Just Retirement Things - December 31st is also the deadline to make any last 2023 401k contributions. This year, you can contribute up to $22,500 to traditional and Roth 401ks and $15,500 to SIMPLE 401ks. If you're 50 and older, you can throw in an additional $7,500 to traditional and Roth accounts and $3,500 to SIMPLEs.

🔥Bottom line: Bonus fact! Did you know if you make an extra mortgage payment this year, you can have your lender apply it directly to the principal? It's a great move to knock down your loan without the pesky interest getting in the way. Speaking of loans, many employers now offer student loan repayment perks, even to entry-level employees.
