It may be as obvious as calling a Kardashian self-absorbed, but Michigan is a happening place for the auto industry! It always has been, of course, but some recent news helps illustrate that fact all over again. The best part? Jobs are coming!
Here are Five Fast Facts about new auto jobs coming to Michigan:
- ⚡ Go Electric - A California company called indie Semiconductor is bringing a new design and testing plant in Auburn Hills that will deliver about 180 new high-paying jobs. They will have cool toys to play with!
- 🚙 Go Mobile - BorgWarner, a company that has long been creating mobility solutions in Michigan, is planning to expand its Auburn Hills EV development and testing facility, adding another 180+ jobs. They will work on batteries and fast charging solutions for cars. This should pair nicely with the cool toys mentioned above.
- 💺 Take A Seat - Another car supplier, Magna Seating, is now planning a huge plant to build seating for cars in Auburn Hills that should be operational by the end of 2024. Sounds like those auburn hills are turning gold (or maybe green)!
- 💰📈 Piling On - Michigan keeps piling on the incentives for a massive new 950-acre Ford plant near Marshall, this time adding $120 million. That pushes the total package to over $1 billion in incentives for the $3.5 billion project! It will add hundreds more jobs earning up to $100k per year, and should inject almost $30 billion into the local economy over the next 20 years. (Ignore the fact that EVs lose crap-tons of money every year…they’ll probably just make it up with volume!)
- 🛑 Not So Fast - Not everyone is happy with all of these mega-sized manufacturing plants going in - they’re taking out huge chunks of farmland and natural land to build them. Ford, at least, has committed to put almost 250 acres along the Kalamazoo River into a conservation easement. Whew, planet saved! 😮💨
🔥Bottom line: EVs seem to be the car of the future. Or at least, that’s what we’re being told. We’re not sure yet if that’s truly the case, but if it is then Michigan will be well positioned to capitalize on it with lots of new great jobs opening up over the next couple of years. This should be good for Paychecks all over the state!
