It's All About Skills. How To Re-do Your Resume for Skills-Based Hiring

These days, employers care more about your skills than where you went to school. 🏫 You know, like nunchuck skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills. Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills. OK, we're getting off topic. 😆

In a tight labor market, employers are struggling to fill open positions the old way. Today, many companies just want to know if you do the job and do it right. 🧑‍💻

Here’s Five Fast Facts on skills-based hiring:

  1. ☑️ And That's a Fact - According to recent data from LinkedIn, 45% of companies now only use skills-related metrics to find candidates. That's up 12% from a year ago.
  1. ⛹️ Hustlin’ Ballin’ and Makin’ It Rain - One of the biggest benefits of skills-based hiring is that it levels the playing field. Workers without college degrees and younger generations can compete more fairly for positions. Researchers say hiring on skills alone could increase the global talent pool by ten times!

  2. 📝 Get to the Point - The key to creating a solid skills-based resume is to show and not tell. Make sure to highlight specific skills and abilities instead of the generic resume jargon (no one cares if you're a "people person"). Throw in hard data points and tangible examples whenever possible. For example, if you saved your company big bucks by coming up with a cheaper way to do something, include the exact numbers.
  1. 📦 Outside the Box - Don't be afraid to stray from the typical resume format. Skills-based resumes often have unconventional sections like "Core Skills" and "Areas of Expertise" to help showcase what they bring to the table. Some people even include a brief story about who they are to add a pop of personality.
  1. 👔 A Perfect Fit - A surefire way to get a company's attention is to tailor your resume to the job description. Job descriptions usually list out exactly what they're looking for in a candidate. If your resume contains those same skills, you're more likely to catch a recruiter's eye and land an interview.

🔥Bottom line: Your resume is your chance to make a great first impression…and you only get one shot (insert the rest of the Eminem lyrics). Switching up your resume to include more skills-based language might just open up a few new doors. Did you get a late start on your career? Have no fear. Get your free pep talk right here. 📣
