It’s been a hot minute since Ohio legalized recreational marijuana sales. Let’s take a look at the financial facts and figures! 💸
Here’s Five Fast Facts on recreational weed in Ohio:
- 💰 Grand Total - Data from the Ohio Department of Commerce Division of Cannabis Control showed The Buckeye State’s total recreational marijuana sales were $11,530,708 as of August 10th. After eight months since over half (57%) of Ohioans voted yay, sales officially kicked off August 6th.
- 🌱 Going Green - Across the board, the average price of an ounce of marijuana flower was $266 in that first week. Overall, stores sold over 173,000 units of product and over 1,200 pounds of plant material.
- 👋 Come In, We’re Open - When recreational sales began, Ohio had 98 dual-use dispensaries, which means they can sell both medical and non-medical marijuana. Now, the state currently has 120 dual-use dispensaries. That number is on the rise, but you can’t set up shop everywhere. Over 70 Ohio cities have laws that prohibit adult-use cannabis businesses.
- 🧾 The Toke Tax - According to the ballot passed to legalize recreational weed in Ohio, a 10% tax is added at the point of sale for each non-medical marijuana transaction. Additionally, five new state funds were created in the treasury to put the money to work.
- 🔥 Blazin’ Big Bucks - Ohio joins 23 other states, two territories, and Washington D.C. in legalizing recreational marijuana. When Michigan pulled the trigger back in 2019, they sold $1.6M worth of recreational marijuana during the first eight days of sales. In Illinois’ first week in 2020, they made a cool $11M.
🔥Bottom line: The Ohio government will use all the new tax revenue for everything from education and entrepreneurship programs to fixing up roads and fighting crime. Did you know if you stop overspending on dumb things, you’ll have more money to buy weed? We’ve got an article all about it.
