How Does PA’s Unemployment Rate Compare to Everyone Else?

We’ve got a lot of jokes about unemployed people. None of them work. LOL! 🤹

When we look at the U.S. as a whole, unemployment is up nationwide. 🆙 However, in the Keystone State alone, the numbers look a little bit brighter. Let’s get nerdy! 🤓

 

Here’s Five Fast Facts on Pennsylvania’s unemployment data:

  1. 👍 Steady Eddie - PA’s keeping things Even Steven. In August, for the 11th month in a row, the state’s unemployment stayed at 3.4%. That rate is significantly lower than the overall U.S. unemployment rate of 4.2%.
  2. 🔎 The Big Pic - The United States August 2024 unemployment rate of 4.2% is significantly higher than the 3.8% it was this time last year. The number of unemployed people jumped from 6.3 million in August 2023 to 7.1 million this past August.
  1. 👷 Use the Force - The civilian labor force in PA (AKA the estimated number of residents working or looking for work) fell in August to 6,581,000. That’s over 20,000 less than the 6,602,000 recorded in July.
  1. 📈 Non-Farm to Table - Non-farm jobs in PA hit a new record in August, making it the 13th consecutive month of hitting highs. They were up 8,000, bringing the total of non-farm jobs to 6.2 million. 
  1. 🍎 Hot For Teacher - Seven out of the 11 job types in PA’s industry supersectors increased from July to August. Which sector got the biggest boost? Education and health services increased by 4,500 jobs.
