We’ve talked about what the Super Bowl does for the host city, but what about the cities of the two teams playing in it? Without all the costs of hosting involved, you’d think it’d be pretty great…and you’d be right!
Here are Five Fast Facts on having a team in the Super Bowl:
- 😯 It’s The Pub - One of the biggest benefits for the cities of the teams in the Super Bowl is the sheer publicity that comes from being part of the world’s biggest sporting event. It’s hard to quantify that, but Cincinnati suggests they got a boost of $40 million to their local economy in 2022’s contest. When they got to the big game last year, they got nine times the usual media exposure, equivalent to $344 million in ad buys! #bargain
- 💻 Online Exposure - Online searches skyrocket when a team gets to the Super Bowl. Kansas City in 2020, for example, hit its highest point ever in Google searches when it got there in 2020 (the first time in half a century it got to the big game).
- 💲 Brought To You By - One somewhat hidden benefit for a team getting to the Super Bowl is corporate sponsorships. As a direct result of last year’s game, the Chiefs got an additional 15 sponsors (up from 61), and the Eagles got 11 (up from 71). This is prime win-win territory!
- ✈️ Hm, Let’s Go There - Another hidden benefit is the general awareness and attractiveness of the city. Kansas City has been in three of the last four Super Bowls (winning two!) and, as a result, they’re in the top 10 for foreign investment, people moving in, and “hotness” of job market…despite not even being in the top 30 in size. Quite the multiplier effect there, huh?
- 💰 Local Income - One analysis shows teams that make the playoffs get an average boost of $100 per capita income, and $120 per capita for teams that make the Super Bowl itself. This happens because people are happy when their teams succeed, and happy people spend big bucks. Which is good, because NFL merch is crazy expensive!
🔥Bottom line: The Super Bowl is big business! For the host team and NFL itself, sure. But it also brings with it a ton of great benefits to the cities of both the teams in it. Some of it is direct additional revenue, some of it is much less obvious indirect exposure. Regardless, it’s a great injection of excitement and money, and that’s great for local Paychecks!
