Wanna get Junior off the couch and into a job on his summer break? 🛋️ Well, you’re in luck. It might be tough to peel him away from the PS5 in a heat wave, but maybe you can tempt him with a pretty sweet paycheck. 💸
Today’s teen jobs pay way more than your average lemonade stand. 🍋 We’re serving up some of the latest stats on who’s hiring and who pays the most.
Here’s Five Fast Facts on who’s hiring teens this summer:
- 👊 Get to Work - According to a recent report, workers between the ages of 16 and 22 make up roughly a third of all new hires every June. That’s significantly more than those between the ages of 23 and 26, who make up just 15% of all June hires.
- 😎 The Teen Scene - Trends show that companies are hiring more teens, which makes finding that perfect summer job easier than in the past. According to the report, businesses hired more young workers in May 2024 than they did in May 2023.
- 💰 Fatter Pockets - Since the pandemic, younger workers have benefitted from bigger paychecks. Back in May of 2019, the median base pay for teens and college students was $11.25 per hour. Compare that to this past May’s average pay of $15 an hour, a whopping 33% increase.
- 🧰 Thrilling Skills - Teens willing to brush up on skills needed by goods-producing industries will make the prettiest penny. Data shows that gigs in construction, manufacturing, and natural resources pay more than others.
- 🍽️ Just the Tip - Retail stores and service industry jobs typically hire the most young workers. Historically, they also pay the least, but labor shortages are boosting wages. The median pay for young workers in leisure and hospitality is $13.30 an hour, but many make tips on top of that.
