Another day, another strike. This time it’s at Hormel, where union workers are ready to hit the picket lines. What’s going on here?
Here’s Five Fast Facts About the Potential Hormel Strike:
- 🫘 Beans - More than 1700 workers represented by The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 663 are preparing to strike. The Union could not come to an agreement with Hormel Foods in Austin, Minn.
- 🍲 Stew - The main issue is Hormel’s $2B gross income. Workers feel they’re entitled to higher wages and larger pensions.
- 🥫Spam - The union unanimously rejected Hormel’s latest offer. The details are confidential, so we have no idea what it contained.
- 🌶️ Chili - All hope is not lost. Both sides agreed to an Oct. 8 contract extension that will keep everyone working without disruption. The Austin plant is Hormel’s largest, with 1,800 workers. Nearly 95% of the employees there are union members.
- 🐖 Ham - Hormel is no stranger to strikes. The company was caught up in one in 1985 that wound up going buck wild and not in a good way. The strike failed and the National Guard was even called up.
🔥Bottom line: The Summer of Strikes continues. It’s another sign that the concept of wealth inequality is slowly sinking in across the country. Time will tell if Hormel comes out looking good in this one or if history repeats itself and union workers fail again.
