Holiday Gigs are Down Compared to Last Year (Except at Amazon)

It might not be time to deck your halls, but it is time to start looking for that holiday gig. 🎅🏼 Whether you need extra cash to spoil friends and family or need to pad your savings account, holiday jobs are a great way to bring in the bucks. 💸

However, this year looks a little different from Christmases past. Many retailers plan to cut back on holiday help, which could make your seasonal job search a little hairy. 🫠

Here’s Five Fast Facts about the holiday job cuts:

  1. 🌲 Trimming the Tree - Across the country, companies are expected to add 410,000 seasonal jobs this holiday season. According to an estimate report, this number is down 100,000 from last year. It's the lowest number since 2008 when the market crashed.

  2. 🎁 Bah Humbug - As of last week, U.S. companies have reported 178,500 seasonal job openings so far. To compare, this time last year, there were 258,201 seasonal job openings announced.
  1. 💰 Scrooge Vibes - Although inflation is cooling, the effects are still lingering like a bad cold. Big name brands are hiring less to gear up for customers spending less than they did in previous years.

  2. 📦 Nice Package - UPS usually beefs up staff around the holidays, but they haven't announced anything yet. They're neck deep in union negotiations. Historically, UPS hires around 100,000 holiday workers, so we'll see what happens.
  1. 🚐 Meanwhile, on Planet Bezos - Unlike many other companies, Amazon says they're planning a huge boost in hiring holiday help. They're adding 250,000 jobs and increasing the average pay to $20.50 an hour.

🔥Bottom line: Once again, our friend inflation ruined a party *sigh*. At least things seem to be cooling off, which means things are slowly creeping back to normal. Although these holiday job numbers stink, don't let them scare you away from finding a gig (they're still out there). If you're looking for a relatively stress-free way to save some Christmas cash, these tips can help you save $100, easy-peasy.
