Apples not only keep the doctor away, they bring home the Paychecks! And this is an especially good year for that here in Washington state! How good, you ask? Well, let’s take a look…
Here are Five Fast Facts about Washington’s apple harvest:
- 📈 Big Picture - The Washington State Tree Fruit Association (WSTFA) just announced good news for this year’s crop! They estimate over 134 million boxes of apples will be harvested this year, up almost 30% from last year!
- ☁️☀️ Weather We Like It Or Not - Last year, an unusually cold spring put a hurtin’ on the crop, but this year it’s been very moderate, leading to a bumper crop that should be around 5% above the 6-year average.
- 🍎🍏 Variety Is The Spice - The WSTFA is expecting a great harvest for five of the most popular varieties of apple: Gala (20% of the harvest), Red Delicious (13%), Honeycrisp (15%), Granny Smith (14%), and Fuji (12%).
- 🧒 The Local Kid - A relatively new variety called Cosmic Crisp – only grown here in Washington state – is a growing favorite, expecting to be about 6% of the overall harvest this year.
- 👍 It’s A Big Deal - The apple crop is about 20-25% of the state’s total agriculture value each year. About a quarter of that is exported around the world, so our bumper crops actually benefit the entire planet (literally).
🔥Bottom line: At the moment, these are projections, so we’ll see if they actually work out. Assuming they do, this is great news for our producers, and for Paychecks all around the state!
