While some people are out here reeling in record breaking Bighead Carps, single folk are casting their nets on Tinder and Bumbling around for their next catch. 🎣 Does anyone still use Plenty of Fish? The last time we were on there, we didn't find much #salty. 😑🐟
All fish dating puns aside, where single folks live (and swim) has a lot to do with how much they need to live a cozy life. 💃
Here’s Five Fast Facts on what single people need to earn to live comfortably:
- 🍎 NYC You Later - According to a recent report, to live comfortably in 99 of the country's largest metro areas, you’ll need a median income of $93,933. Thinking of moving to the Big Apple to find your Mr. Big? In NYC, that number jumps up to $138,570, putting it at number one on the list.
- 🛌 Snug as a Bug - So what exactly does "comfortable" mean anyway? The report defined comfortable as earning enough in your paycheck to cover a 50/30/20 budget, where 50% of your monthly income goes towards necessities, 30% to discretionary spending, and 20% goes to savings or paying off debt.
- 🌴 West Coast Money - Not surprising, but the state with the highest number of expensive cities for singles is…California. They tipped the scales with seven metro areas. The most expensive CA city is San Jose, where you'll need to earn over $65.79 an hour or $136,739 for that comfy life.
- 🤠 Ain't No Hold 'Em - Want to get the most bang for your buck? Looks like you'll need to head to Texas. You can live comfortably with the lowest salary in these three cities: Houston, El Paso, and Lubbock. In each, you'll need to make around $36 an hour or $75,000 a year.
- 📊 Catch 22 - Jobs in pricey cities tend to pay more than in other places, but rents and housing costs in those cities are higher, too. Big rents can make it tough to buy the essentials or sock extra cash away in a savings account. On the flip side, big paychecks are hard to find in lower cost metros, even if rents and housing are on the cheap.
🔥Bottom line: We're totally beating a dead horse or five when we say everything's expensive AF. Even if you're a party of one, you still have big bills to pay. To all the single ladies out there, getting a sweet raise just might help you move to that deluxe apartment in the sky. Don't be afraid to ask for it! Use these top tips to stay on your A-game.
