Here Comes the Money…Maybe

The often-discussed $17B state surplus may be coming back to the people in the form of individual rebate checks. But that’s only if Gov. Walz has his way.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on Walz Checks:

  1. 💰 If At First… - Walz's original version was for $1000 for single people earning less than $164,000 and $2,000 for couples earning less than $273,000. The amounts will most likely increase since the surplus has exploded.
  2. 📅 Try, Try Again - Of course, that was back in June when the surplus was only at $9.25B. Walz said the amounts would most likely change with the added growth.
  3. 💵 Not So Fast - While Democrats control the legislature, the Democrat Farmer Laborer (DFL) legislators have a bit of a different opinion. Their priorities are for permanent spending on education, health care, affordable housing, and maybe getting rid of social security income taxes.
  4. 💸 Checklist - Those same DFL members say rebates are not at the top of their list, but they also say that anything is possible in their discussions with Walz.
  5. 💳 Compromise? - Considering the DFL has a majority in the state legislature, Walz may have a tough road ahead.

🔥Bottom line: This is one of those damned-if-you-do scenarios. Who’s going to turn down free money, right? But then again, who’s going to say no to eliminating some taxes, better educational resources and health care? Maybe it could be both. No matter what, there’s a ton of money that needs to be spent and it needs to be spent on all of us.

How do you think they should spend the surplus?
