If you’ve ever felt like your boss is all up in your grill and micromanaging the heck out of you, you’re not alone. 59% of American workers feel they’ve been micromanaged at some point in their career. So how do you deal with it without losing your mind?
Here’s Five Fast Facts About Dealing With Micromanagement:
- 👨💻 What It Is - Micromanagement occurs when a boss, supervisor, or manager closely supervises, scrutinizes, and controls the work of their employees. Basically, the boss becomes the only decision maker and you best get in line. Instead of teaching, they tell.
- 🧟 Y Tho? - Much like the paving on the road to hell, a micromanager has good intentions. They want the best performance from their team, they just can’t let go of control. After all, they’re in charge for a reason, right? Right? RIGHT?
- 🦫 Strike First - So how do you deal with it? One expert says a healthy way to deal with micromanagement is to give regular status updates ahead of time. It’ll help them build trust and eliminate their need to constantly check in with you and get them off your back.
- 👔 Prologue - Another good technique: before a project starts, talk with your boss about how they will be involved. You can agree on standards and give you the opportunity to map out a plan of action together.
- 🔨 Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em - It’s especially important that you don’t fight back. It’ll only encourage them to micromanage you even more. Instead, try to figure out what is causing the behavior and address it if you can.
🔥Bottom line: It’s not easy being in charge, especially if you’re not a good fit, unprepared, or even anxious about running things. And while sometimes you can’t fix stupid, most bosses will appreciate proactive and positive employees. It’ll allow them to loosen their grip on things and create a better working environment for everyone.
