Google’s Shelling Out Big Bucks for Ohio’s Energy Grid

Hello, is your refrigerator running? 📞 Hahaha you better go catch it…wait. It’s not running? Sorry, wrong number. 🥴 But also, keep the door shut and stay cool, brother. Best of luck to you.🍀

Tech giant Google is kicking off a new program to give Ohio’s energy grid a healthy boost. Here, we break down the what, why, and how. 👇

Here’s Five Fast Facts on why Google’s dumping big bucks into Ohio:

  1. 💸 Grid Goodies - Google’s launching a brand new fund to help improve Ohio’s electric grid and bring it up to date. With $1 million in initial funding, the initiative aims to help the Buckeye State meet energy demands as more companies like Google set up shop.
  1. ⚡ Going Nuclear - Back in October, Google joined forces with nuclear energy firm Kairos Power. Through their agreement, Google will purchase energy from several small reactors that are set to go live in 2030.
  1. 🏙️ New York Numbers - Speaking of 2030, that year seems to be a big milestone for Ohio. Experts say that by then, thanks to the uptick in large data centers, the state’s central region, the state would consume as much power as Manhattan.
  1. 👾 Data Dump - So far, Google has three data centers in the Buckeye State. Last year, both Amazon and Google together added almost 400 megawatts of data center capacity in the Columbus area.
  1. ♨️ Feelin’ the Heat - Data centers suck up a TON of energy and require big-time power to stay up and running. All the new activity could cause what’s known as “power distortion,” putting a major strain on Ohio’s power grid. This could negatively impact citizens and cause appliances to overheat and malfunction.

🔥Bottom line: Google can pump all the money it wants into the energy grid. And if our refrigerator blows up, we know exactly who to blame. Did you participate in Dry January this year? If so, we’re in the home stretch. You’re just days away from sipping on that Golden Nectar AKA Natty Light. Check out this article where we show you how Dry Jan is good for your wallet, too!
