Gen Z's Layoff Loophole? Government Jobs

We're still cringing over last year's layoffs and bracing ourselves as the trend continues. 🫣 However, it seems like the youngest workers among us have a plan! 💡

Although they might change their hair color and fashion every five minutes, Gen Z wants to settle down in a secure job. Their answer in this uncertain world? Government gigs. 💼

 

Here’s Five Fast Facts on why Zoomers love government jobs:

  1. 👨🏼‍💻 Government Goodies - Aside from stability, why does Gen Z love government jobs? According to TikTok, they love the benefits and time off policies. They also love the flexible working arrangements, healthcare perks, and retirement plans. Some government gigs also offer student loan forgiveness.
  2. 🔒 In My Stability Era - According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, government employees have a median tenure of more than three years higher than those in the private sector.
  3. 🥱 Can't Win 'Em All - Although they sing their praises, Gen Z doesn't love everything about government jobs. Some viral posts gripe about less pay than private employers, and a long background check process.
  1. 🔥 Pink Slip Symphony - Layoffs were everywhere last year and they're still happening. In 2023, 260,000 jobs in the tech industry alone were lost. 
  1. 🫡 Patriotic Duties - The federal government employed an estimated 2.87 million people in 2022.

🔥Bottom line: Whether you're a Zoomer or a Boomer, government jobs are available for folks of all skill sets and experience levels. If you're striking out in the private sector, why not hit up Uncle Sam's job board? Head to USAJobs.gov to check out jobs at the federal level. Word on the street says there's plenty of job postings with urgent hiring needs.
