Back to school season always makes us want to rewatch Billy Madison. Something about it reminds us that it’s never too late to achieve those big goals. 🙌 If peeing your pants is cool, consider us Miles Davis! 😆
On the topic of schools, a chunk of Pennsylvania’s school districts are getting a boostie boost of funding. 🚀
Here’s Five Fast Facts on the money going to PA’s school districts:
- 💰 Cashing Out - In an effort to pump up education funding, 50 PA school districts will receive a total of $32M. These supplements range from $50,000 to $5M and target districts with high local taxes compared to the wealth of their residents.
- 🏡 Get Off My Property - These payouts are a result of a Commonwealth Court ruling that found PA’s public school funding system “unconstitutionally inequitable,” mainly due to its heavy dependence on property taxes. In other words, students in poorer school districts get schools with poorer funding than wealthier districts.
- 🅰️ A for Effort - Officials give supplements out to districts based on something called the “local effort rate.” It’s basically some math that divides the local tax revenue raised in a district by the market value of property and personal income of residents in the district. If local effort rates are in the 90th percentile or above, they qualify for the supplement.
- ⏩ Follow the Money - Where exactly is the money headed? A large number of districts to receive supplements are in Allegheny county (15) or the Philadelphia “collar” counties (15 in Delaware and Montgomery Counties).
- 🧮 Range Rover - While supplements vary widely throughout the state, the median amount is $330,000. The smallest payout will go to central PA’s West York Area School District ($23,000). In Monroe County, the East Stroudsburg Area School District will get a cool $5.5M.
🔥Bottom line: The Derek Zoolander Center for Children Who Can't Read Good and Wanna Learn to Do Other Stuff Good Too wasn’t on the supplement list. We’re not sure why. Better luck next time!
