Forestry And Michigan

If a tree falls in the forest but no one is around to hear it, does it make any noise? Before we get to that answer, let’s talk about forests.

In today’s high tech America, we don’t often think of having lots of forests. But the fact is that we do, and we use those forests for lots of great things! In fact, Michigan gets a huge economic boost from its forests and the associated industries.

Here are Five Fast Facts about Michigan forestry:

  1. 🌳 Product Placement - The forestry products industry refers to things like logging, paper, furniture, and pretty much anything else that has wood in it. Not counting the blocks of wood in politicians’ heads, of course.
  1. 🌎 Lots Of Area - You may not know this, but Michigan has over 20 million acres of forest land - that’s about half the state! About ⅕ of those acres are managed by the state’s Department of Natural Resources.
  1. 🪚 Lots Of People - Forestry products accounted for over 40k jobs during 2022 (the last data we have available), and supported another 88k jobs indirectly, too. That’s a lot of wood!
  1. 📈 Lots Of Growth - In Michigan, this industry has hit a new revenue record. From 2019 to 2022, it grew by $4 billion, adding $26.5 billion to the state’s productivity!
  1. 👍 Higher Efficiency - Ironically, the number of workers in the forest products industry has actually dropped by 3.6%. This just means the industry has been operating much more efficiently!

🔥Bottom line: Even if it’s not a sexy industry, it’s a big one that is performing very well! So, if a tree falls in the forest it doesn’t really matter if anyone hears it or not…we hear how well Michigan is doing with those trees, and we love it!
