Evictions in the Twin Cities are Reaching Critical Levels. What’s the Solution?

Minnesota’s eviction saga continues. Cases are skyrocketing at one of the fastest rates in the country. It’s left housing advocates rushing to help and find solutions.

Here’s Five Fast Facts about Twin Cities evictions:

  1. 🏡 We’re Number Two! - Evictions in Hennepin County have jumped 44% over 2022, and Ramsey County evictions are up 25%. The only city with higher numbers is Las Vegas.
  2. 🏚️ New High - There have been around 15,000 eviction filings in district courts, with 708 of them coming in Hennepin County in September alone. That’s the highest monthly total since the eviction moratorium was lifted in 2022.
  3. 🏠 Take It Or Leave It - The evictions are mostly due to financial problems made worse by inflation and a lack of affordable housing. Low-income tenants are forced to take whatever they can find, even if it is more than what they can afford. A recent survey found that one in four renters and one in 10 homeowners in Minnesota pay more than they can afford for housing.
  4. 💰 Nowhere to Go - Builders have a hard road ahead of them: Hennepin and Randal counties have a deficit of more than 50,000 affordable housing units and they don’t just magically appear overnight and they’re not cheap to build.
  5. 🧾 Helping Hand - The state is doing what it can to help, providing housing organizations with $1B in funding and $200M in annual revenue from the new sales tax.

🔥Bottom line: Before you start hate posting, you should understand that a large chunk of these evictions aren’t due to laziness or handouts. The real issue here is that there is no solution or help in sight due to a lack of housing and economic turmoil. Whatever the solution is, it cannot come soon enough, but sadly it looks like it’s going to be a long road ahead for those in need.
