Evers Rolls Out Proposed $2B Increase in School Funding

Gov. Evers just unveiled his next plan: a $2B increase in public school funding. That’s a staggering amount and you’re probably wondering where it’s all gonna go.

Here’s Five Fast Facts About Evers $2B Plan:

  1. 💰Who Pays? - Evers' plan has a source that we’re all probably familiar with at this point: our growing $5B budget surplus.
  2. 🏫Cash for Kids - The main focus of the plan offers $800M in school aid to keep property taxes down AND increase revenue limits by $350 per student in 2022-23 and $650 in 2023-24. In other words, schools can spend more on kids without your property taxes increasing.
  3. 🎒Mental Help - The plan also puts $240M toward every public school district getting one full time mental health service staff member. This is probably motivated by the reports that kids in the Badger State are facing big time mental health challenges.
  4. 🚌What Else? - There’s also a $10M focus on reading along with portions for financial literacy, lunch programs, and teacher retention.
  5. 🧑‍🏫Standoff - Even if Evers does win re-election, the State Republicans will get a say on the budget next year. Based on the past few years, it’s probably not going to happen the way he wants. So, expect some compromise and negotiations.

🔥Bottom line: Based on your location on the political spectrum, you probably see this as a re-election stunt or a legislator offering concrete solutions for our budget surplus. In reality, it’s probably a bit of both. To sound like a broken record, your vote is really the only thing that will help determine if this plan works.
