“Range anxiety” is regularly listed as a major reason people don’t want to make the transition to electric vehicles (EVs). No one wants to run out of battery on the way to work! So, employees with a long commute may have a real problem on their hands. Of course, bosses looking to support the transition to EV’s could simply fix this by installing charging stations, right? Should that be required, and what would it mean for your paycheck?
Here’s Five Fast Facts Company-Provided EV Chargers:
- 🧾 For Now - In the short term, there is no law on the books and no evidence any kind of law is being drafted at this point.
- ⚡Charging Chargers - One big concern is that installing a charging station can cost around $6,000. Some employers can’t or aren’t willing to shell out that cash without charging employees to charge their car (see that pun, right there? 😜) Talk about a buzzkill.
- 🔒 Insecure? - Another drawback is security. For an EV to charge, it needs to be parked by the charger until it’s finished. Who’s going to watch your vehicle? Won’t that take away from your productivity or force your company to increase security to keep thieves from stealing those expensive charging cables?
- 📄 401K and 22kw - There are also positives. Employer-provided charging can be considered a job benefit to keep existing employees as well as attract new ones. And depending on how you feel, it may be an incentive for you to get one. Would you work for a place that gave you free gas?
- 🚗 Cashback - Employers can apply for potential tax credits to lower their costs and even eliminate any employee fees.
🔥Bottom line: We’re in uncharted territory here and everyone – and I do mean everyone – is scrambling to figure out how EVs are going to work in the grand scheme. Digging your feet in and saying you won’t ever buy one is fine, but others will (and are!) and we'll need to figure out how to get everyone to coexist.
