Co-Op Allows Regular WI Residents to Bank on Solar

Wanna buy a solar farm? No, it’s not like buying swampland in Florida. This is the real deal! Renew Wisconsin and the SolarShare Wisconsin co-op are allowing regular people like you to invest in small scale solar farms — regardless of how much money you make!

Seems like a great idea but is it good for Wisconsin’s Paychecks? We’ll let you decide.

Here’s Five Fast Facts about Wisconsin’s Solar Co-Op:

  1. ☀️Bright Idea - SolarShare matches its member investors with contractors who want to build solar facilities that produce 1 to 5 megawatts of power. That power then goes to utilities for more than a quarter of Wisconsin's customers. They’re currently planning two projects in Juneau County.
  2. 🚜…And a Mule - On average, SolarShare’s builds take up less than 40 acres and connect directly to the grid, so there are no long distance lines to worry about.
  3. 🔌Trippin’ off the Power - This isn’t a new idea, either. There are 33 small solar farms across the state and they’re generating a combined rate of 35 megawatts. For reference, 1 solar megawatt powers 164 homes. So that’s a lot of power.
  4. Who started it? - The entire project kicked into gear thanks to a $265,000 grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp.
  5. 💰How do I get in on this? - You’ll need to join SolarShare for $100 (rural residents, veterans and people of color can join for $25 due to a state grant). You’re then allowed to purchase shares as projects are developed. Landowners are also allowed to invest a bit differently.

🔥Bottom line: The solar co-op isn’t a get-rich-quick scheme, but it’s also not for everyone. It’s perfect for people who want to expand Wisconsin’s renewable energy resources, help their community and boost local job growth. You also stand to be one of a select group of people who own shares in both an NFL Team and in the solar power industry.
