There are few job sectors growing faster than energy, and nowhere is that more true than in Michigan. The state is trying to help things along here, so let’s look at some of the ways that’s happening.
Here are Five Fast Facts on energy jobs in Michigan:
- 📈 How Many? Right now, there are almost 120k jobs in Michigan’s energy industry - everything from manufacturing and construction to high efficiency equipment installation to EV cars and components. Experts expect almost 8% growth over the next few years, too.
- 1️⃣ Leading The Pack - Michigan’s energy sector is the biggest in the state, with over 75k workers. It’s the biggest number in the Midwest. What can we say, we like to lead!
- 🔍 A Week Of Focus - One of the ways MI is trying to bring even more exposure to the industry is through Careers in Energy Week. It’s a time when reps from education, government, business, and the energy industry itself come together to promote jobs in the energy sector through events like career fairs. They’ve been doing it for 10 years. Dare we say there’s a lot of energy around this annual week…?
- 👋 Howdy Partner - Another great avenue for promoting energy jobs is the Michigan Energy Workforce Development Consortium (MEWDC), formed in 2008. It has dozens of reps across the private and public sector and has awarded millions of dollars in grants to educational programs to help prepare thousands for good paying energy jobs.
- 🇺🇸 It’s Everyone - In 2022, over 75% of the clean energy business in the state came from small businesses (less than 20 employees), and almost 11% of all Michiganders in clean energy were veterans.
🔥Bottom line: We’re all in favor of more jobs for Michiganders, especially high paying jobs in skilled sectors that will never go away, like energy. There are some reasons for proceeding with caution here, but as long as the growth is real and substantive, then it seems like a very good thing.
