Best (Cheap) Payroll Systems For Small Businesses

You’re a small business, but things are going well and you’re growing. You need to transition into more than a one-man/woman show, so one of the first things you need is a good payroll system that won’t suck the life out of your bottom line. There are a lot of them out there, but how do you find the one that’s best for you? We looked at several lists from reputable places, and it seems there are some clear winners!

Here are Five Great Small Business Payroll Systems that won’t break the bank:

  1. 🥇 Gusto - Taking first or second in all of our lists is Gusto. In addition to automated full-service payroll for both employees and contractors, it contains a great suite of HR tools for benefits administration, handles tax filing, and time tracking. Tiered plans start at $40 monthly plus $6 per employee per month.
  1. 🥈 OnPay - Another strong entry is OnPay, a tool designed to seamlessly integrate payroll and HR functions. Don’t let its simplicity fool you - it has schedules and rates for part-time, full-time, and contract workers, and automates much of the tax process to reduce errors. Its HR tools include onboarding, PTO management, and post-hire tasks, and its customer support is highly rated. OnPay also costs $40 per month plus $6 per employee per month.
  1. 🥉 Intuit Quickbooks - What would a payroll software roundup be without Quickbooks? One of the most well known, it obviously integrates seamlessly with other Quickbooks products. It has robust benefits administration at all levels, time tracking, and HR support. There are multiple plans to layer in additional functions you might need. Plans start as low as $45 per month plus $5 per employee per month, or get the integrated plan with Quickbooks Accounting starting at $75 per month.
  1. 👍 Paychex - Paychex is a great option if you want flexibility. Its most basic plan contains everything you need for payroll for employees and contractors, features like direct deposit, an employee self-service app, and 24/7 support. The cost starts at $39 per month plus $5 per employee per month, but there are a lot of customization options to get a much more comprehensive system.
  1. 💸 Payroll4Free - If you’re trying to keep it as slim as possible, check out Payroll4Free. True to its name, this tool offers a basic (yet complete) payroll functionality at no charge. The catch is that it’s for a max of 10 employees, and only runs on Windows. Tax filing and direct deposit services are additional fees.

🔥Bottom line: You should focus on the thing that your business is there to do, not waste time writing checks manually and updating your own personal spreadsheet each month! Getting the right tool in place might take a bit of work initially, but will save you a lot of time and effort in the long run, and help your business fly.
