You wanna live fancy? Live in a big mansion? Party in France? 💃🥂 You better work, b*tch. That sage advice comes to us from one of the wisest women of our time: Miss Britney Jean Spears. 👑
If you’ve got money goals, working hard is only part of the equation. Saving those dollars is the secret sauce, but in *this* economy? 🥴 A new survey shows how Americans feel about how much they sock (or don’t sock) away.
Here’s Five Fast Facts on how Americans feel about their savings:
- 📊 Survey Says - To get the pulse on how Americans feel about their savings, Yahoo Finance teamed up with Marist Poll and surveyed over 3,000 U.S. adults with at least one checking or savings account. Just 22% of respondents said they were either “very” or “completely satisfied with their savings.” Compare that to the 35% who reported being “very” or “completely dissatisfied.”
- 📈 Prices Gone Wild - Rising cost of living has been a hot button issue for the last several years. Two-thirds of Americans surveyed say the cost of living for the average family where they live isn’t affordable. Although inflation peaked at a 40-year high back in June 2022 (9.1%), we’re still feeling the burn. The Consumer Price Index (how much we pay for things like housing, groceries, and essentials) rose 2.7% year over year in November 2024.
- 💰 Comfy Cash - Only a little over a quarter of surveyed Americans say they live a comfortable life. Just 31% of respondents report they can afford their basic needs with a little money left over. Another 30% say they’re only able to afford the basics and 12% said they don’t have enough money for necessities.
- 👫 Battle of the Sexes - When it comes to satisfaction with their savings, more women are fed up than men. According to the results, 40% of women said they were either “very” or “completely dissatisfied” compared to 28% of men.
- 🏎️ Zooming Ahead - Looking across generations, younger Americans seem to be more optimistic than the old heads. In 2025, 63% of Gen Z survey participants say they’ll save more than they did last year, as did 53% of millennials. Gen Z was also more likely to describe the cost of living as “very affordable” (9%) compared to just 3% of Boomers and 2% of the silent/greatest generation.
🔥Bottom line: If you’ve been having trouble saving as much as you’d like, you’re certainly not alone. High prices across the board are gobbling up our paychecks like it’s Thanksgiving Day. To cover even basic expenses, many Americans have turned to credit cards to make ends meet. Head over to this article where we gab about record high credit card debt.
