With Return to Office mandates in full effect, more and more companies across the country are offering flexible schedules as a way to keep everyone happy-ish. If you don’t have one and you want one, you should ask!
Here’s Five Fast Facts On Asking For a Flexible Schedule:
- 🤔 A Plan - Know what you want before you go in and be very clear about it. For example, a four-day work week may mean 32 hours for you, but it may mean four 10-hour days to your boss. Do you want to work four hours in the office and four at home every day? Which part of the day?
- 💡 Double Check - Make sure a flexible schedule will work with your company’s overall culture. Are there already co-workers who have similar schedules? If so, how does it work for them? The more information you have about other roles, the better.
- 🫡 Who Benefits? - Point out how this arrangement benefits both the company and you. For example, if you’re wanting to come into work later so you can drop off the kids at school, it could allow you to handle any late-breaking business or tasks.
- ⚖️ On Trial - It’s important to explain that you’d like a trial period to show that the new schedule will work. It should ease your supervisor’s mind about how it will work.
- 🧾 On Paper - Much like every other agreement in the office, get it in writing. Everything will be clearly defined, eliminate any questions down the line, and protect you.
🔥Bottom line: It never hurts to ask for something, especially if you have the information to justify your request. The worst your boss can say is, “no.” That’s really all you have to lose in a situation like this. If you wind up performing better, then your boss can take credit and you can continue to work in a schedule that best suits your needs.
