Hey, have you ever wondered if you could get to space with a suspended driver's license? Do they have alien cops hanging around up there? 👽🚨 We bet if they did, Elon would have been in space jail a long time ago. 😆
Bringing things back down to earth, Ohio residents are really racking up the suspended DLs and it's no bueno for the economy. 📉
Here’s Five Fast Facts on the impacts of suspended licenses in Ohio:
- 🛻 Time Out Chair - New data from the Ohio Capital Journal shows that, each year, roughly 1.7 million Ohio residents have their licenses suspended. Another study revealed that number makes up about 14.4% of the state's labor force.
- 😰 Good Driver, Bad Habits - Suspended licenses don't just happen because you're being reckless on the road. Suspensions also result from unpaid legal debts, court judgments, and falling behind on child support payments. In fact, a 2022 study shows that 60% of Ohio's suspended licenses are not due to bad driving.
- 💵 The Domino Effect - According to the data, almost half of folks with a suspended license had more than one suspension, and 75% were suspended for a year or longer. Analysts say this is a sign that people are struggling to pay off compounding fees and fines.
- 🥴 Permanent Sick Day - Analysts say these suspensions make finding and keeping jobs much more difficult. An increase in suspended licenses means there are less people available and ready to show up to work. When there are less people at work, less goods are produced.
- 🚙 Keep It in Park - Suspensions impact poor communities and communities of color the most. In more affluent areas, citizens have less of a hard time paying the fees and fines, getting them back on the road quicker than less fortunate neighbors.
🔥Bottom line: In Ohio, suspended licenses could also impact voting. Stricter laws mean no ID, no ballot box for you. We don't know what the solution to this riddle is, but something's gotta give! Speaking of the workforce, check out these new stats on working from home post-pandemic.
