Are High Dollar STEM Jobs Growing In WA State?

We love talking about great jobs here because we’re all about great Paychecks! It probably doesn’t surprise anyone, but STEM jobs are a great way to get one of those great Paychecks, and some recent data backs that up. So if you’re in STEM (or are looking to get into it), you’re thinking in the right direction!

Here are Five Fast Facts on STEM jobs in Washington State:

  1. 🌱 Not The Plant - When we talk about STEM jobs, we’re not talking botany. No, we’re talking about science, technology, engineering and math jobs. You know, nerd stuff (this is not an insult…we love nerds!).
  1. 🥈 Silvery Sheen - The Evergreen State has the second highest average salary for STEM jobs in the nation. Our average is almost $124k; only California is higher at almost $125k. Surely our STEM people can find some ways to get raises and take that top spot, right?
  1. 💪 Top Dogs - So which specific jobs are driving the big bucks? Anesthesiologists top the list with an average salary of $314,500 per year; after that are neurologists ($285k) and then orthopedic surgeons ($275k). For the record, we’re JUST FINE with those folks getting paid a whole lot. No one wins if those jobs are underpaid and resentful slackers…
  1. 🤔 Why Oh Why? - So why do STEM jobs pull down such great salaries? Partly because they require so much more education and/or training to get into, but mostly because they are the backbone of the “knowledge economy,” which is generally considered the way of the future.
  1. 🌎 Across The Country - If you don’t want to live on the West Coast (WHAT?!), where else are STEM jobs paying the best? New York ($114k), Nevada ($112k), and Maryland ($110k) are where you should look. Also, avoid the lowest states: Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, West Virginia, and Alabama, which all range between $85-92k.

🔥Bottom line: Whether you are already in one of these STEM jobs or are looking to make a change into them, hopefully this info is useful.
