Anybody Home in the Land of the Free Land?

Want some honest-to-goodness free land in the southeastern part of Minnesota? You’re in luck because one town is giving it away. For real! It’s not a bait and switch, either.

Here’s Five Fast Facts Free Land in Claremont, MN:

  1. 🗺️ Where? - Claremont. It’s in Dodge County. It has a population of 548. Not exactly a metropolis.
  2. 🏘️ What the What? - There are nine lots available to working families (or people) who meet established income limits and pay a $1,000 application fee.
  3. 👴 How? - It’s because of the Homestead Act of 1862 that gave citizens 160 acres of public land if they lived on it, improved it and paid a registration fee. This is still a thing.
  4. 🛏️ Why? - Claremont took ownership in 2012 after a developer pooped the bed and went bankrupt. It’s offering the land up to get people to move there and up the population count (among other things). Apparently no one wants to live there and they’ve tried many times to find some takers.
  5. 🏠 Is There A Catch? - The only clear catch right now is that you have to build your home…and live in Claremont.

🔥Bottom line: I’m not throwing shade at Claremont here. With housing costs through the roof (heh) right now, this represents a fantastic opportunity if you’re willing to do the work. But be aware: small town life isn’t exactly for everyone, and it looks like that’s the case in this instance. If you’re looking to retire to the simple life, this might be just the gig you’re after.
