Feeling bored at work? Staring out the window, plotting your escape? 🏃 Hey, those emails aren't going to answer themselves! Unless you've discovered an AI hack…and if you did, please pass it along. We're begging you. 🙃📨
If you're not jazzed by your job, you're not alone. New research shows that American workers feel more detached from their employers than ever. 👎🖥️
Here’s Five Fast Facts on employee engagement:
- 💼 Rules of Engagement - According to Gallup's latest employee engagement poll, only one in three Americans is engaged at work. The poll is based on national surveys of over 18,000 workers, both full and part time.
- 📉 Debbie Downer - Gallup's research shows employee engagement levels trending downwards for the last several years. In 2020, engagement levels peaked at 40%. For the full year of 2023, 33% of employees were engaged. However, active disengagement is also down – it dropped from 18% in 2022 to 16% in 2023. Is the quiet quitter crew backtracking?!
- 🥴 What Is It You DO Here? - So what causes employee engagement numbers to tank? One factor could be a lack in role clarity (AKA how well you understand your job and how it fits into the overall company). When workers aren't clear on their focus or purpose, it causes job dissatisfaction and a decline in engagement.
- 🥵 Burned Out Bosses - Sucky managers also lead to low engagement. While there's no excuse for bad behavior, many of today's managers are disengaged in their jobs themselves and burned out AF. Managers also say that remote and hybrid working environments make their jobs more difficult, especially when it comes to setting expectations for new employees and providing proper training.
- 🚽 Flushing Funds - Researchers at Gallup estimate non-engaged and actively disengaged workers cost the US economy $1.9 trillion in lost productivity.
🔥Bottom line: The poll also showed that over half of managers surveyed believe restructuring, layoffs, budget cuts, and staffing challenges played a huge role in employee dissatisfaction. Who can blame them? It's been a wild ride since the pandemic, and the nation is still very much in recovery mode.
