Aldi Ditches Plastic Bags

There’s a movement to get rid of plastic bags from major retailers. Aldi, one of the fastest growing grocery chains, has declared their intention to get there first. How will this impact your shopping experience?

Here are Five Fast Facts about Aldi going plastic bag-less:

  1. 🥇 Winning - Aldi is looking to become the first major retailer to ditch plastic bags from all 2,300 locations. This will keep over 4,400 tons of plastic out of circulation yearly. That’s a pretty big pile of plastic!
  1. ⏳ Not Sudden - This isn’t a new thing for them. They’ve been working toward this goal for months, bit by bit. You can still buy reusable cloth bags or bring your own bags (even plastic, if you must).
  1. 🌎 Part Of The Bigger Picture - This is part of an overall effort toward sustainability which includes using 100% natural refrigerants by 2035. Over 600 stores are already meeting that goal. Early adopters, or suckups?
  1. 🌊 Catch The Wave - This notion is picking up steam, with several states banning plastic bags, and some other retailers (like Walmart) also pushing toward the same goal. You can see the bandwagon jumping from a mile away!
  1. ❓ Pricing Impact - At this time, it’s not clear that this change will reduce prices at all - it’s an effort purely intended to improve sustainability.

🔥Bottom line: It’s great that they’re looking to reduce the amount of plastic trash going out into the world. If they could find a way to make their prices lower while doing so, well, that’d be the best win possible! In any case, it’ll be interesting to see if this change brings in any new customers who want to help them achieve their goals.

Is this going to change your mind about Aldi (or how you shop there)?
