Agriculture: At the Heart of the U.S. Economy

OK kids, it’s history time! 🤓 Did you know that the famous farm tune Old MacDonald can be traced all the way back to 1706? Rumor has it that it was part of an opera before it became a folk song. E-I E-I Bra-VO! 🐷🎶

American farms have been the backbone of the country since its humble beginnings. A recent report shows that the agriculture industry still plays a YUGE role in the nation’s economy. 💵

Here’s Five Fast Facts on the booming business of agriculture:

  1. 🐮 Having a Cow - According to a recent report from FeedTheEconomy.com, the U.S. agriculture industry contributes over $9.5 trillion to the economy. That’s an 18.7% piece of the overall pie. This figure is slightly down from 2024’s contribution of $9.6 trillion.
  1. 🧑‍🌾 Green Acres - Our nation’s agriculture industry is made up of roughly two million farms and ranches, covering two out of every five acres in the country! It also includes everyone else who keeps the machine moving, like food scientists, logistics workers, and truck drivers.
  1. 🚜 Job Well Done - Since the pandemic, the U.S. agriculture industry has been in bounce-back mode. Since 2020, employment in food and agriculture has increased by over a million jobs.
  1. 📦 Shipping Out - How does the United States agriculture industry impact the rest of the globe? According to the report, the U.S. exports almost $183 billion in food and agriculture products each year. That’s a lotta lettuce.
  1. 📈 Sow Tough - Although the agriculture machine is moving right along, it has its challenges. Workers’ wages are up year over year, but they haven’t kept up with inflation. Changing climate patterns, a lack of access to funding, and rising input costs also come into play.
