Affordable Dreams: The Best Midwest Cities for Middle-Class Life

What’s the difference between being broke and middle class? Credit cards.😅💳

Funny, right? Wait, too real? Yeah, we felt that.

Okay, but let’s get serious: Is the middle class disappearing from Midwest cities? A recent report digs into this by comparing median incomes to living and housing costs. The silver lining? There are still cities where middle-class families can survive—and even have some fun money left over. So, where should you set your sights if that’s your goal?

Here are Five Fast Facts on how far a middle class salary goes in the biggest Midwestern cities:

  1. 💲 Median Income - The report used the national median middle-class income of just over $75k. They stacked it up against the cost of living and housing. What’s left? Your surplus—aka fun money.
  1. 🏅 Top Spot - Drumroll, please: Detroit is the champ! Homeowners there spend around $33k on living costs, leaving a tidy $42k left over. Renters aren’t too shabby either, keeping about $31k for themselves.
  1. 💪 Strong Contenders - Wichita, KS flexed into second place with $38k leftover for both homeowners and renters. Then it’s Milwaukee, WI ($36k), Indianapolis, IN ($35k), Kansas City, MO ($35k), and Columbus, OH ($33k).
  1. 🤦 Bringing Up The Rear - No shocker here: Chicago’s the caboose. Middle-class homeowners end up with $27k leftover, while renters limp away with $23k. Ouch!
  1. 💨 People Vote With Their Feet - From 2010 to 2020, population shifts in these cities tell an interesting story. Detroit shrank by 10.5% and Milwaukee by 3%—guess “affordable” doesn’t always mean “appealing.” Chicago inched up by 1.9%, but it’s so huge it plays by different rules. The other cities? They all grew by at least 8%. Looks like folks are flocking to those more affordable pastures!

🔥Bottom line: When you’re trying to stretch your dollar as far as possible, the location can be a huge part of how well that works out for you. If you’re struggling to make ends meet, maybe a fresh start in a new (and more affordable) location is the thing that will set you on the right path!
