Who doesn't love a nice little recap as we head into the new year? 🥂
While you're sitting down with a nice glass of wine, why not read up on how Ohio did this year in terms of budget and new bills? 🗒️ It's not exactly a beach read, but it might give you something to talk about at your next party. 🗣️
Here’s Five Fast Facts on the budget and bills passed in 2023:
- 📝 The Rundown - Ohio lawmakers passed over a dozen bills in 2023 and passed a whopper of a state budget. The current two-year state budget is a cool $86 billion.
- ✂️ Cut. It. Out. - Within the budget, around $3 billion in tax cuts were included. Specific cuts included tax breaks for those saving for homes as well as breaks on baby products. Most of the tax cuts were related to commercial activity. They also adjusted the personal income tax, but that only really benefits those making over $100,000 annually.
- 🎒 School Stuff - One of the most noteworthy changes of the year was the approval of universal vouchers. Now, Ohio students can use public money to attend private schools. Additionally, academic policy decisions were shifted to a cabinet level agency controlled by the governor instead of the state school board.
- ⚖️ Sweet, Sweet Justice - Another significant bill passed was the Scouts' Honor Law, which extends the statute of limitations to victims of sexual abuse. This gives them more of an opportunity to collect damages.
- 🤏 A Little Light - In 2023, Ohio lawmakers passed fewer bills than usual. Actually, they set a record; this year the Buckeye State passed the fewest number of bills since 1955.
