40-Hour Balancing Act

Your friends (or in my case, a court-appointed therapist) have probably told you that you need to fix your work-life balance at least once. But what does that mean exactly, and more importantly, how can you actually fix it?

Here’s Five Fast Facts About Work-Life Balance:

  1. 🤷 Huh? - Work-life balance is the level of priority you give between personal and professional activities and the level to which job-related activities come home with you. If you’re doing lots of work at home (for starters), your work-life balance is out of whack.
  2. 🚶‍♀️ Tightrope - Experts say the perfect work-life balance minimizes work-related stress while maintaining your mental and physical health. Sounds easy, right? Stop laughing!
  3. 🔎Nice View - When it comes to finding the sweet spot, the real difficulty is realizing a healthy balance looks different for everyone, so you can’t exactly consult a manual. But, there is at least one common place to start.
  4. 👓 Take a Look - Experts say to ask yourself if you’re spending enough time doing what you really want, putting enough time and energy toward the important non-work people and things and figuring out if you feel stuck. Be honest. If the answer is “no” you’re off-balance.
  5. 🛑 Hit Your Limit - Once you have those questions answered, figure out your priorities and focus on putting the necessary amount of time towards those, rather than your job. Realize you are not going to get fired over finding a healthy balance. Especially if you communicate with your boss.

🔥Bottom line: Again, our needs and ideas of the right balance are different for everyone. Finding it is important, but admitting to yourself that you’re putting too much of a focus on your job can be a major start toward a process that will help you live a more fulfilled life.
