One that has to be balanced, however, by an awareness that the state’s signature industry has a not-so-ancient history of reading the future wrong.Detroit-Hamtramck had been scheduled for closure (along with three others in the U.S. and Canada) as part of a massive restructuring GM announced in 2018. But EV production beginning in 2021 will retain 2,200 Detroit and Michigan jobs, the company said.GM’s big commitment to an electric future for transportation is mirrored across the industry, as Hyundai, Kia, BMW, Volvo and Porsche all have announced plans for new EVs over the next few years. Ford Motor Co., also headquartered in Michigan, is in the midst of an $11 billion investment in EVs and autonomous vehicles, the centerpiece of which will be the conversion of the massive Detroit Central Station (a previously abandoned ruin and symbol of Detroit’s decades long decay) into an EV office and testing center.In unveiling plans for Detroit-Hamtramck, GM President Mark Reuss said they showed a commitment to ensuring that Detroit and Michigan remain “the epicenter of the global automotive industry as we continue our journey together to an electrified future.”Reuss said vehicles assemble there, including electric SUVs and pickups, “will offer different ranges of performance at different price points to meet customers wherever they are.” Significantly, however, where customers are right now is solidly connected to vehicles powered by internal combustion engines.One of the primary reasons the Detroit-Hamtramck plant was slated for closure was GM’s failure to generate sales for its plug-in electric hybrid Chevy Volt, while sales of the company’s other primary EV, the Chevy Bolt, flagged in 2019.A 2018 analysis by the East Lansing-based Anderson Economic Group on GM’s restructuring noted that GM, which was selling more EVs in the U.S. than anyone other than Tesla, relied on the vehicle of the future for less than 2% of overall sales.“General Motors is profitable because of the sales of (internal combustion) pickups and SUVs. Those buyers are subsidizing EVs and experimental vehicles,” said AEG President Patrick Anderson. An analysis by J.D. Power and LMC Automotive forecast that battery-electric vehicles will make up 7.4% of the U.S. market by 2030.But that forecast too is clouded by the reality highlighted in a series of reports from J.D. Power and Survey Monkey called the Mobility Confidence Index, analyzing consumer attitudes toward self-driving and electric vehicles.The bottom line from those surveys (taken each quarter since early last year) is that a majority of consumers remain wary, said Kristin Kolodge, executive director of driver interaction and human machine interface at J.D. Power.Their skepticism is rooted in long standing concerns about the hassle of re-charging EV batteries, the vehicles limited range and relatively high cost, she said.The vast majority of consumers have next to no experience with EVs, Kolodge said. “Two thirds have never even been in one.”Enthusiasm for EVs among those who have owned one is high, she said, with a vast majority inclined to buy electric again. But that’s a vast majority of a tiny minority, the five percent or so of Americans who have ever owned an EV, Kolodge said. Consumers in their survey showed a high degree of approval for the putative environmental benefits of EVs and their potential to reduce carbon emissions, she said.“But the disconnect comes when they think, ‘How is owning one going to benefit me personally?’”Automakers “are going to have to work hard on marketing and bringing dealers on board.
